Gilpin, William

William Gilpin (1724-1804), a British author known for his "picturesque" or descriptive travel writing, traveled extensively for material for his works. Gilpin's Tour of the Wye (1771) is said to have influenced the opening lines of William Wordsworth's "Lines Composed a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey, on Revisiting the Banks of the Wye during a Tour" (1798).
